An introductory guide that demystifies waste management fundamentals, explaining why they matter for safety, compliance, and business outcomes.

The name may be a tongue twister, but the information will be as straight forward as I can make it!
In this series, we will be:
Whether waste is your thing or just something you’re starting to learn about, this series is here to help you understand what is required and why it matters.
Ok the basics… where to start…
Why not with “why should I care?”. Great question!
For a variety of reasons.
If waste is your life like mine, it’s how you make your living. It is how you pay the bills, how you support yourself and your loved ones, it gives purpose and allows you to flex your brain muscles. Simple yet complex, and it will never go away. As long as the world produces goods and products, there will be waste produced. So overall, a great & sustainable industry to be in.
If waste is not your thing, and maybe you are here because it was plopped on the corner of your desk, the why is a little different.
Making sure you, and your coworkers, get home safe at the end of the day is the most important thing. Full stop. Without people doing the work, nothing gets done, and if you can’t do it safely it is not worth putting yourself on the line to make a buck. Your organization probably already has mitigation strategies in place, so make sure you are reviewing them and ensuring they are tied back to your waste programs.
Some waste materials are ridiculously hazardous and super dangerous. Mixing two things that shouldn’t be mixed, not knowing about the H2S vapours, or dropping a bottle of crystalized picric acid could lead to devastating consequences. So, make sure you know what you are handling, and if you don’t know, ask!
Safety of people is always first, and in my mind safety to the environment is second. We all live on the same planet and if we don’t take care of it, it won’t take care of us.
Next is the safety to the company, both the company’s reputation and assets. We don’t want things going haywire or have an incident on the highway and next thing you know; you, your manager, your VP and everyone up the chain are hauled into a court room to explain what happened and why the rules weren’t followed.
Of course that is a worst-case scenario, but it happens.
There are a variety of different penalties that can happen when you don’t follow the rules, and we can talk about that in a different post.
Waste is an inevitable (insert Thanos meme here) output of any creation process. It’s a cost of doing business.
But where there is money to be made, there is always money to be saved.
Having a proper and robust waste management program can lead to significant cost savings.
How, may you ask? Well, having a strong program allows you to:
Now, will these cost savings turn into a juicy bonus? Maybe… Hopefully… (C-suite, if you’re reading this take note).
We all have a role to play in some part. If we are tasked with something we need to deliver on it.
But Wizard, it all seems so complex! I agree…
Most non-compliances, incidents or inefficiencies in the waste world are unintentional; they are caused by unclear processes, lack of information, and lack of support.
Many companies have either a dedicated person, or even a team to help with waste questions, or an environmental group who can get you the information you need. As well, most regulatory agencies have waste fact sheets, or reference materials you can also look through for information if you are feeling up to finding them.
If all else fails, you always have a WiQ-ed Waste Wizard friend to call for help when the million dollars is on the line.
Proper waste management programs are critical to protecting our people, our environment, and our company. There are significant savings that can occur if we do it right and there are resources out there for when we need a little help.
Just as a friendly reminder for you energy industry folks out there, the Alberta Energy Regulator has a new version of Directive 058 coming out (D058 is the Directive that shares how you are supposed to manage your oilfield wastes) in March 2026 so this may be a good time to start (or at least think about) reviewing and refreshing your waste management programs. New rules, new program!
In our next WiQ Waste Wizard Wisdom post we will get into what a waste is, the different types of waste out there and the how the regulations work.
Thanks, Waste Wizard out.
